Pasto is the capital of the department of Nariño in southern Colombia. Located in the Valley called Atriz amid the Andes mountain range called the Nudo de Pasto on the foot of the Galeras volcano.
Founded by the English explorer and conquistador Lorenzo de Aldana in 1539 under the name of Villaviciosa de la Concepcion, now officially known as San Juan de Pasto originated in the name of the indigenous grasses that inhabited the region the arrival of English conquistadors.
